Kronberg im Taunus
Kronberg was founded in 1220 when the castle was built
during the reign of the House of Staufer, which
also made a
considerable contribution towards development
of the town
after its foundation.
One of the reasons why, even today, Kronberg's attractive
old quarter is an unspoiled example of late
mediaeval archi-
tecture. A gem nestling at the foot of the
Taunus region.
A town which, since 1330, can boast of rights
granted by
royal edict.
In addition to handicrafts and trades for many years the
cultivation of orchards, agriculture and vineyards
determined
the character of the town and although more
than a Century
ago the vineyards had already disappeared,
Kronberg joyed
from the 18th Century onwards a first class
reputation for
its orchards, which extended far beyond the
outskirts of
the town itself.
Just what a gem of town planning existed in the Taunus
region was recognised by the highly respected
members of
the "Kronberger Artists Colony", all of them
artists of the
Frankfurt school, more than a Century earlier
who made their
homes here and found in Kronberg inspiration and
motifs.
Empress Frederick, daughter of the English
Queen Victoria,
too numbered among this group of artists and
after the death
of her husband, Emperor Frederick III, had the Castle
Friedrichshof - the present day Schloss Hotel
- built on the
vof the Villa Schoenbusch as her dower house.
Kronberg is famous for it's splendid, widespread greenery
and parks, attractive framework for the nooks
and lanes,
sleepy courtyards, narrow passages and hidden stairways
in the colourful confusion of houses in the
old town, enthron-
ed above, the castle.
Kronberg
is worth a visit in any season don't miss the op-
portunity to taste local specialities in one
of the authentic
restaurants or enjoy haute cuisine in the Schloss
Hotel which
is also widely know for it's first class hospitality.
